Hudson River NERR, New York
Date: May 1, 2009
Times: (Eastern Daylight Time) --- Time Zone Converter
Suggested Grade Level: Middle School and High School
Field Trip Overview: Join naturalists, students, and scientists to explore one of our region's most valuable resources – the Hudson River Estuary. Meet some fish and other animals that call the Hudson home, see students engaged in field research, and learn how scientists monitor short-term and long-term changes in the estuary.
These broadcasts explore the dynamic nature of the estuary -- from salty to fresh, urban to wild, and past to present as we celebrate the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage up the river. We'll describe some of the challenges to the river from invasive species and climate change, and also offer references to the annual "Day in the Life of the Hudson River Estuary" (aka Snapshot Day).
Broadcasts take place at Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, NY, midway along the 153-mile-long Hudson River Estuary. The combination here -- freshwater and tidal -- is globally rare, so register today to learn more about this amazing system!
Field Trip Outlines:
- 11:15 am-11:45am: The first segment explores how we learn about changes to the estuary, from tapping commercial fishermen’s knowledge to using fisheries-science technology. We highlight student science in the Juvenile Glass Eel Project and talk about current and projected climate change impacts for the Hudson.
- 1:30pm - 2:00pm: The second segment begins in Norrie Cove with students seining for fish. We then move to shore to examine their catch and view a variety of saltwater and freshwater species that now call the Hudson home. We distinguish natives from newcomers and build a live food chain.
