South Slough NERR, Oregon

Date: May 1, 2009

Times: (Eastern Daylight Time) -- Time Zone Converter

Field Trip Overview:

Empire, Oregon is located on lower Coos Bay and historically this site was the first county seat.  Prior to that, it was a village site for the Coos Indians.  This will be the location for the Oregon EstuaryLive segments in 2009.  The site has panoramic views of the bay and the north spit, a narrow strip of dunes that separates the estuary from the Pacific ocean. Remnants of docks and piers in addition to a modern public pier and small boat dock suggest the historic and current importance of water to the location.  Empire dock is also adjacent to port facilities where barges used to dismantle the wreck of the New Carissa, a large ocean vessel, have been working.

Our story line for the two Oregon segments will highlight the 150 year anniversary of Oregon's statehood and the 35 year anniversary of South Slough NERR using an overarching perspective of past events, present conditions, and future possibilities in light of global climate change.
